Ilfracombe shore and boat sport – Summer Sun Fishing

Hot sun and crystal clear water is not ideal for all species but one fish that will feed well in these conditions is the ballan wrasse that can be caught using king ragworm, crab or prawn. Ollie Passmore landed these two colourful specimens to just over 3lb at a mark near Ilfracombe.

The calm waters are also brilliant for boat anglers with plenty of tope being caught off Ilfracombe on Charter boats and on Private boats. Toby Bassett  caught this fine tope of 33lb from his own boat a cracking photo as well!

Dan Hawkins ventured out near Lundy Island on with a party of anglers and they enjoyed success with the first tope of season along with bull huss, pollock, coalfish, whiting and the inevitable dogfish. They also enjoyed the spectacle of dolphins, porpoises and seals. Dan skipper of Reel Deal commented that such days make his job so enjoyable.

Big fish are on the feed moving close inshore to feast on the food dislodged by storm Eleanor. Several anglers have enjoyed success as the waters have calmed. The window of opportunity is often short as a bitter North East wind is now tearing down channel chilling any angler out there to the bone.

Ali Laird enjoyed the session of a lifetime when he  fished a North Devon rock mark to land a fine tope of 29lb 10oz(Above) and spurdog of 9lb 15oz and 9lb 8oz. (Below)

Fellow club member Dan Miles Redmore was also delighted to land his first ever shore caught tope weighing 33lb 10oz.
