Paul Chamberlain enjoyed an evening fishing session with his son Ethan and caught his first gilthead bream  scaling 3lb from the Taw estuary .Paul thought the evening was over before it started as first cast he realised that the spool end cap on his Abu 6500 was missing but Paul persevered and two hours into the flood his Century ultralight hooped right over and after a short but spirited battle and wading out to my waist it was landed.Nice to know they are established in our river system and not just in Cornwall.

In recent seasons gilthead bream have become a regular catch for North Devon anglers with specimens landed on a regular basis throughout the summer months. Combe Martin SAC member Jamie Steward has landed several of these hard fighting sea bream from local North Devon marks the best scaling 3lb 1oz.

Club Record Gilthead bream

Combe Martin SAC member Robin  Bond fished a mark in the lower Taw estuary and landed a new club record gilt head bream scaling 5lb. These hard fighting fish are being caught on a far more regular basis in recent seasons a possible result of climate change? During the eighties these fish were tempted from South Devon marks and seemed to begin to populate Cornish marks as the seasons progressed. They are now caught a across the South West, South Wales and from Southern Ireland and beyond.
