Hacche Lakes- A Fine Prospect

Hacche Moor Fishery near South Molton is a recent addition to North Devons’ Day Ticket Carp Fishery portfolio and offers some superb fish in a stunning setting. I visited the lake for the first time this weekend full of optimism after hearing of some superb catches of fish. As is often the case my visit seemed to be ill timed to coincide with a bitterly cold North West Wind that appeared to have put the carp off the feed with only two fish banked by the four anglers fishing the bottom Lake. I failed to connect though I did have a couple of indications that could indicate that my rigs needed fine tuning.

I will return soon and try to make amends! A chat with the fishery manager Andrew Parkinson who runs this superb fishery give me confidence that the lakes will prosper and give North Devon Anglers another fine water with some big carp.

The lakes have matured nicely have well thought out swims all with wood Chip bases. There are also toilet facilities and running water. The lakes are surrounded with an otter fence so anglers are reminded to ensure that they always close the gate!

Landing nets, Unhooking matts and weigh slings are all provided at the fishery to reduce the risk of infection to the valuable stock.

Action on the far bank!

Mainline Baits Carp Pairs Open – Upper Tamar Lake

Report on the weekend from Ben Smeeth:

Our first Mainline Baits Carp open at Upper Tamar lake was a resounding success. The fishing was extremely tough but made for a really close competition which every pair of anglers could have won right up until the end!

33 pairs made the trip and the draw took place at 1pm with anglers choosing their swims in order. They also collected a Mainline Baits goody bag filled with some of their fantastic innovative products and a free 24 hour permit for Lower Tamar to use at their leisure.

The fishing was really hard, only 9 carp caught between everyone but this was great as a competition! The lake had been fishing so well leading up to the competition with fish to over 25lbs being caught regularly. The pressure of the competition and weather conditions really made it difficult for the anglers.

The winners were Dean and Dave Willoughby from Barnstaple. They banked a cracking 24lb 6oz common from peg 32 to take the £2000 top prize.

Runners up were Karl Yates and Allan Jones from Bude who managed 2 fish for 22lb 15oz and they collected £1000.

Third place finishers were Rich Ford and Nigel Woods from Launceston who had a cracking 21lb 10oz mirror.

The stamp of fish was really good and it was a great weekend. The next Mainline Baits carp open pairs in on 5-7 July and is already filling up fast! Bookings can be made on 01566 771930

Two Twenties and a Thirty

Paul Willsea joined us with his wife for Valentines week and managed to get some fishing in and caught a personal best 30lb Mirror, a 25lb Mirror and a 24lb Mirror all from the Specimen Carp Lake and won our Fish of the Week competiton!

Paul ’s Story –

“I have been coming to AP for 21 years and have never caught 3 big fish in one week. On Monday 18th February, I went down to the Specimen Carp Lake. The Reel went screaming off after about an hour, I couldn’t believe it, I landed a 24lb Mirror using a tutti fruity boilie.

After a little while, off it goes again and I landed a 25lb Mirror on a Sticky Baits Krill pop up, I was well chuffed, couldn’t believe it – 2 20’s in 1 day!!

Then on Thursday 21st February, about 2pm, I thought I would pack up in about half hour, when suddenly off the Reel goes. I landed a 30lb 2oz Mirror on a tutti fruity boilie. This is the best Valentine week I have ever had, I beat my personal best by 4oz, celebrated my Birthday on Valentine’s Day and had an absolutely fantastic week at AP!”

Here he is with his Winning Fish and being presented his prizes by Zyggy and Zenia with special thanks to PB Products UK.
