Match Report No 3
Date: 12-10-2016
Venue: High Hampton Lake 2

Match number three was at the fine venue of High Hampton although it was a strange one as it was on lake 2 which is a lake that fishermen never fish.

It was well under way and with an early push from Mathew Cross who in the first two hours had netted 10 carp, this was much to the surprise of other anglers as they were sitting staring in amazement and wondering what was happening.

Until Thomas Owen had a surge and caught four Carp back to back, a great effort from Tom on the day who won Man off the match as he has transferred over from Carp tackle to pole fishing and showed he was improving weekly.

John Lovell also started to catch, having caught some nice skimmers and a fair size bream on the feeder, we also saw last weeks winner netting some nice carp in an attempt to catch up with Cross who was now standing still as his swim had died

Other fisherman on the lake had also been catching and a wide size and variety of fish was being caught to make the match a close one, Cross had obviously capitalized on that early lead and wasn’t to be caught.

The results:

Late Season – Smoothound

Combe Martin SAC member  Ian Laird – 9lb 15oz smoothound

Smoothound have been a regular feature of sea angling catches during the autumn months in recent seasons with hounds landed right through into December. This could be a result of numerous factors including climate change? It is however difficult to speculate. Trigger fish became common for several seasons and this was seen as a clear sign of global warming; they have been virtually non existent this year though?

Melbury Carp Catch

img_6442Tony Welch visited Melbury very recently and sent in this catch report to South West Lakes Trust:

‘On my latest trip fishing the Devon South West Lakes Trust waters I decided to head to Melbury Reservoir. I spent two nights on the picturesque lake and struggled on the first night fishing in horrendous rain. After a change in the weather and also a change of tactics I managed 6 takes over the last 18hrs catching a number of nice commons to 19lb 5oz using Mainline Baits Essential Cell with home made Mainline Polaris hook baits over the top. “Melbury is another gem in the Southwest Lakes Trust portfolio, a very enjoyable trip!’

Whilst this should be the best time of year for shore angling it does not follow that it will always be easy. I have enjoyed two sessions this weekend one in hope of tope the other after the frustratingly difficult to tempt grey mullet. Mullet were present in good numbers a few big fish ghosting around ignoring the bread-flake offerings totally. Hundreds of tiny mullet attacking the baits if dropped into the murkier water.

My only catch was a shore rockling caught on a 6/0 hook and a squid and mackerel cocktail. Its leopard type markings unlike any I have seen previously.

The estuary has been on fine form for flounder enthusiasts but unfortunately did not fish well on the big tide fished by Triple Hook Club members on Sunday October 16th. Only three flounder were caught by the 12 anglers fishing the best to Julian Stainer weighed 1lb 23/8oz. In runner up spot was Dennis Toleman with flounder of 1lb 3/4oz and in third Steve Luxton with a flounder of 151/4oz.

If you have any news or good sea angling pictures please send to North Devon Angling News.
