Ben Smeeth sent me this information on Upper Tamar; sure to be popular; I was tempted to keep quiet in case I cannot get on the boat myself!!!!

Perch fishing Mecca Upper Tamar has a rowing boat available for anglers to hire over the winter at £10 per day starting on Monday 7th November. There must be two people in the boat and it must be booked and paid for in advance on 01566 771930. Further details are available on booking. Late season bass catch

Jeremy Johnson sent me a report of a cracking day on his friend Robert Hurst’s rib on Sunday October 30th targeting bass on the lure.  Not sure of conditions so they decided at the last minute to change their minds from an early cod session up channel, to a bass session off Clovelly. Proved to be a good shout. As they landed 10 bass including a personal b on lure for Jeremy – (weight unconfirmed as the fish was released and had no scales but was certainly larger than an 8lb fish Jeremy had a couple of months back) They also had a perfect conditioned 6lb and 4lb bass and several round the 2-3lb mark.

GONE FISHING CLUB Match Report No 5 Date: 29-10-2016 Venue: Hair Pie

Below is the latest report from Gone Fishing Clubs – Ian Owen They fished the prolific Harepie Fishery near Newbridge.

This weeks match was held at Hair Pie which although a small venue is well stocked and early signs were it would produce good healthy bags for all involved.

Chris Lamey set us of with a lovely few carp back to back and this just snowballed as everyone fishing was catching, although not all of the anglers were catching carp.

Plenty of silvers coming out and as the day went on it was clear that John Lovell was producing the weights as he was very busy with carp and lots of silvers.

Matt Cross who was on the other side of the lake was not catching carp but was in to a good run of silvers with some impressive Roach, we also had Tom Owen catching plenty of silvers and fishing on corn and maggot, off course the best weather for roach so not a surprise.

Lovell stormed ahead with Craig Lamey making a late surge and having lost a few decent carp in the tight peg on the lake he was unlucky to finish in second.
Some hard work from all who entered and the banter was flowing thick and fast.

A great match and plenty of banter got the anglers through the cold day

The results:

1st  – John Lovell49lb 10oz

2nd – Craig Lamey 39lb 5oz

3rd  – Ian Owen 26lb 10oz

Another Great day fishing well done all who entered and next week sees a different setting being Slade Reservoir and with the last hour being tackle away and spinning for pike and perch.

14875429_10157658663295284_1131427848_nRoss Stanway fished Ilfracombe Pier with me on Tuesday evening and we chatted at length about tope fishing. The following night Ross was inspired to head back out to the coast with his good friend Daniel Welch. The decision proved to be a good one as Ross was rewarded with a fine tope of 34lb 1oz. The fish was tempted using half a mackerel presented on 8/0 Sakuma Manta extra hooks.

ITS DOUBLE TOPE – Martin Pearce

posted in: Sea Angling, Sidebar | 0

Autumn time sees a dedicated few target the elusive hard fighting tope that haunt the waters of North Devon. A tope from the shore is perhaps the greatest challenge for the dedicated shore angler unless of course you include the remote chance of hooking and beaching a porbeagle shark!

Martin Pearce – tope 42lb 8oz

Martin Pearce has struck gold in mid October first beating a fine tope of 31lb 4oz and then following it up a few days later with a fine specimen of 42lb 8oz. Landing a tope is seldom a solitaire event and Martin was very appreciative of a help in hand from his mate Darren Bell who tailed both fish. The fish were tempted using whole mackerel on Varivas big mouth extra 8/0 hooks. Both fish were tempted from undisclosed North Devon Rock Marks.

Junior Bank National @ Exe Valley Fishery

posted in: Game Fishing, Sidebar | 0

Nick Hart reports from just over the border at Exe Valley Trout Fishery.

Showing the adults the way is up and coming junior angler Seth Mayhew-Tuson, age 16, who has just won our heat of the Greys Junior Bank National supported by the Angling Trust.  Seth has picked up many tips having become part of the England Youth Fly Fishing squad, using this knowledge to great effect to secure top spot with 3 fish weighing exactly 10lb.

The fish were caught within 2 hours so Seth also gained himself an extra 2lb 8oz time bonus to finish well ahead of the field.  His successful tactics included an intermediate line and mixed up retrieve (mainly slow figure eight) with a combination of Blobs and Nymphs fished around the deep water inlet.

In second spot was last year’s third placed angler, Toby Bennett, with two fish weighing 5lb 14oz.  He caught these quickly, also in the deep water inlet using a floating line but couldn’t add to his bag before the match finished at 1pm.  Toby is studying fisheries management at college and is an incredible caster winning a major tournament earlier this year with a cast of 32 metres!

A very happy lad! Charlie Cooper, age 10, with his third placed Trout

Meanwhile the youngest angler, Charlie Cooper, couldn’t get the fish to stick and lost 3 before finally netting a 2lb 14oz Trout to collect third prize of a fly line and line snips.  This was a fantastic effort and the ten year old will now progress on to the 2017 final to be held next April.  Charlie used an intermediate line to catch his fish and it was great to see Seth helping out the younger anglers after he had completed his limit.  This is what competition fly fishing is all about, sharing, learning and meeting new people.
